I love quotes. Golden nuggets of truth and opinions and packed into this small sentence or two. We can take so much inspiration from them and keep them as reminders for us to live our lives in a better way. My home is surrounded by them, on my desk, on my laptop, my phone, in my journal. Things which remind me to live my life to the highest standards and to always be moving towards becoming the person I am destined to be. Whenever I find something which moves and inspires me, I store it and keep it there. Then, sometimes when I am looking for some insight or some motivation or a lesson to take in, I will scroll through my stack and just ponder until I get the meaning I was supposed to take out of it on that day.
Well today when I was scrolling through them, I thought to myself “how selfish of me to keep all of these bits of gold to myself”. So, I thought I would share with you some of the quotes and gifts from other people which certainly impact my life and the meaning I take out of them.
So here you go. Thirty of my favourite quotes which I have stored away over the years and the lesson I take from it.
As human beings we have a need for connection and whether we like it or not, we take on the traits, characteristics and expectations of the people we choose to spend our time with. The importance of the peer group you choose to spend time with and allow to influence you in who you are cannot be overstated. Choose people who are playing life at a higher level, that expect more from themselves and from you, who have different conversations and who you can share your growth journey with. Be prepared that if you choose to go on a journey to become the best version of yourself possible and to turn your life into something spectacular you will probably lose some friends along the way, and make some new ones also, it is inevitable.
How many of us wait for the right time in life to do things or the perfect time. There is never a perfect time, the only one that exists is right now. One of my mentors taught me to get 70% ready and then just get it done. Complacency and procrastination will kill dreams.
Simple, yet profound at the same time. Create an expectation every single day that today is going to be a great day. Seems obvious right? But how many times have you personally let the ‘stuff’ from yesterday impact your current day? Or the weather? Or what you had to do today? Or going to work? Or simply getting up on the wrong side of the bed. Every day is a gift, make your 86,400 seconds of today count.
My mother, bless her heart, used to always send me little quotes of news articles on things she found interesting and thought I would also. This was one of them which I keep in my office at all times. It just remind me to take all of myself no-matter where I am or where I go. That the only time is now and to be present in it.
Take this quote and take out the word rich and broke and replace with success and failure or healthy and sick or happy and miserable or whatever you might want. Many people wait and hope there life is going to get better and improve and bring into it the things they want, but your results are 1000% up to you, you are responsible and this means you have to get up and do the things you have been thinking about. Successful people in any space are not lucky; they just do what most only think about and procrastinate on.
We so often live in our past of our successes and failures and the experiences both good and bad, which have happened in our lives and hold onto the beliefs about who we are and what we are capable of. Time to turn the page and instead become who you are supposed to be and realise that everything which has happened in your life has been a gift in some way to who you are and who you are going to become.
Our identity is what we hold onto most in life, we will do whatever it takes to stay consistent with who we believe we are and the identity we hold for ourselves even if it is not giving us the results we want. At any moment we must be willing to let go of who we are in order to become who we are supposed to be, which is your absolute best self.
There will be many challenges in our lives we will come up against and it is easy to give up in the face of each of them, but it is when we meet these challenges and the road blocks life throws in our way sometimes this is where we grow the most, through adversity.
Honestly, what successful person hasn’t failed over and over again in their lives. What athlete hasn’t stumbled or business mogul lost money or mother or father lost it sometimes. Failure is part of the journey; the most successful people simply fail at a faster rate on their journey to extraordinary.
Why do we all have so many hang ups about money? We are taught that being wealthy means we are greedy and being poor is somehow spiritual or means we are a good person. Money is not the pathway to happiness, but tell me what being poor is the pathway to?
Success is not one big things which occurs for people, it is seldom getting lucky or about all the stars aligning or all of a sudden discovering we are a genius at something which before we couldn’t do. Success is the stuff we do every single day which builds up and up and eventually overflows as this thing we refer to as success.
There will never be a perfect time where all the stars align and the heavens shine down and the some friendly angel telling us that it is now time to do what we have been dreaming of and then shows us the way. Just get started with the current level of knowledge and resources you have and create the path.
You might see a few in here from this guy. That is because I personally love him as a teacher. Amazing. Do I need to explain why I love this one and what it means to me?
No-one starts off being great. Every master was once a beginner, the difference is they kept going and refined their skills and kept going despite how good they looked doing it. You are never going to look good and become great at the same time
So many things that were thought to be impossible are now more than possible. Take Roger Bannister breaking the 4 minute mile or how every Olympics new world records tumble or what science proves and allows. We once thought almost everything that exists today as impossible as a species, but look around you and take in the marvel, even as you are reading this on the laptop or your phone. Crazy right?
Oh…wow! I can totally relate. Every set back is an opportunity to begin again, you are never down and out, you are never broken. Losing hope is only a belief system, use the pain of failure as the drive to get back up again and go. Rebuild, bigger and better.
We can think all we want, but unless we take strategic action, those thoughts will never see the light of day, and it mightn’t be easy, in fact sometimes it will be difficult, especially if you are going against the grain of what most think is a normal life. All successful people have a bias towards action – make this a part of your own life.
Are you a bit weird? I know I am a bit weird. I love other weirdos. Find other weirdos and hang out with them.
Many people go through lives as ‘dead fish’ just floating down the path we all have laid out before us. You know what I am talking about? Go to school, get a job, buy a home, get in debt up to your eye balls, pay taxes, put some in super, have your 2 weeks holiday a year and work until you are 67 and then retire and finally enjoy yourself and try not to have too many regrets along the way about never having done the things you really wanted to do and follow your passions and experience everything you wanted out of life. This reminds me to always swim against the tide.
You can’t argue with da man. Take out ego and desire and you are left with happiness through gratitude of who you are and where you are and what is possible.
Well I had to put one of my own in there didn’t I? The only way to guarantee success in life is for you to become better at dreaming, creating and bringing into reality the things that you want and more equipped to handle the challenges thrown at you along the way. This is why the development of self and continual growth and learning is critical to create an extraordinary life.
I told you, you would hear from Jim Rohn again. We can come up with a thousand excuses about why we can’t do something or why it is going to be hard and as people this is what we are accustomed to focus on. There is always a way, you just have to keep searching until you find it.
Have you ever had one of those where you are running around, so massively busy, putting out fires and by the end of the day you look back and realise you have accomplished precisely nothing? I know I’ve been there. Get clear on your critical tasks which add the most value in your life and focus on those. When you focus on these critical tasks, the urgencies just seem to disappear unless you are running around sorting out other people’s urgencies in which case you have to stand firm on what is important for your own life.
I love Zig, he always did have a way with words. You never read one book and then become successful. Go to the gym once and are fit. Success and motivation are daily activities. Make sure you fill your environment full of anchors and reminders of where you are going and who you are becoming so you stay connected to your ultimate destination.
The fear of failure is probably the greatest hindrance to taking action and the reason why most people never go after what they want in life. Every time you set a goal or create a dream, make sure you understand the ‘why’ behind why you want it and make it juicy and load it up with all of the things it will give you in your life, the emotions it will make you feel, the quality of life it will deliver you. Create a massive desire around anything you want in life and ensure it outweighs the fear you hold about it and then go to work.
If you are not going to help yourself, then why should anyone else come to help you? Responsibility is the key theme here. The only person responsible for the quality of life you are living today is you and the only person responsible for creating the life you truly want is you. People want to help others who help themselves. If you are simply waiting for someone to come along to save you, you will be drowning for a long time.
This reminds me to always focus on creating my own life in every moment and that if I am not clear about where I am going and my purpose that it is easy to get caught up following someone who is. Always focus on building your own dreams
Remember to dream big, so big that they sit up in the sky somewhere. Think like a kid and don’t let the limitations of our conditioned adult mind get in the way of what might be truly possible. Dream big and then take small daily actions towards those clouds.
Until recently I thought this was also attributed to Henry David Thoreau, however I have more recently discovered that was incorrect and was first mentioned by Henry Stanley Haskins. Everything we need is within us right now, and no matter what has happened in the past or what lays before us, we are giants and are built for greatness.
If someone else has achieved greatness, then why can’t I? Why can’t I be like the greatest people who ever lived? Why can’t I create something extraordinary and contribute massively? Use those who have come before us as role models in our lives. Choose the things you admire most from the greatest people and aim to bring that piece of greatness into your own life.
I’ve got one final quote to add to all of this, which explains why I love quotes so much and kind of wraps it up so to speak and that is:
“I stand on the shoulders of giants”.
We can all take the gifts and life lessons that those before us have left for the world and use them for your own life and stand on their shoulders and these are some of the lessons which I stand on.
